Biking and Hiking
There are plenty of biking and hiking trails in and around the Sault Ste. Marie area. The local John Rowswell Hub Trail is a 25 km multi-use non-motorized trail system that connects many significant points of interest in the city of Sault Ste. Marie. The hub trail also links to the Voyageur Trail, part of the Trans Canada Trail system. Further north of the city there are a number of hiking trails in Lake Superior Provincial Park.
Canoeing and Kayaking
Sault Ste. Marie is located on the St. Mary’s River, which joins Lake Superior with Lake Huron. There are also many smaller inland lakes that can provide a leisurely canoe or kayak experience. Our Heyden Lake Property is located on a small inland lake that is ideal for someone that may be looking for an hour or two of leisurely paddling.
Fishing and Boating
The St. Mary’s River is home to some world class fishing. Fish from the boardwalk downtown, or grab some hip-waders and venture into the St. Mary’s River rapids. If you have a boat with you, there are local marina’s where you can launch it and fish out in more open water. There are also a number of inland lakes in the area that can provide an enjoyable fishing experience.
Snowshoeing and Skiing
There is usually plenty of snow in the Sault Ste. Marie area to allow excellent Skiing and Snowshoeing opportunities. A favorite with locals is the Hiawatha Highlands area, within the city limits, which offers a cross country skiing as well as a snowshoeing experience. For those looking for a more adventurous cross country experience there is the Stokely Creek ski area, approximately a 30 minute drive north of the city. For those looking for a great downhill skiing experience, there is the Searchmont Ski Resort, located approximately a 40 minute drive north of the City. Our Heyden Lake property is located midway between the City and Searchmont, which makes it an ideal place to stay if you are on a ski vacation.
Snowmobiling
Sault Ste. Marie is located in the heart of the Algoma District. There are plenty of groomed snowmobile trails in the area which are maintained by the Sault Trailblazers Association, a member of The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs. Our Heyden Lake property is ideally located for the snowmobile enthusiast, with a groomed trail located less than a kilometre drive on your snow-machine.
